Guide to Saanane National Park

Saanane National Game Park is situated on an island in Lake Victoria. Saanane National Park encompasses around 2.20 square kilometers. Established as a zoo in 1964, it was the first zoo in Tanzania. In 1991, the island was designated as a game reserve before being officially designated as a national park in July 2013. The park’s name originated from its former owner, Saanane Chawandi. Saanane National Park is approximately a 15 to 20-minute boat ride from Mwanza, Tanzania. Most of the park’s animals were transported to the area between 1964 and 1966. It is one of the few parks situated within a city in Tanzania. The island comprises three islets and an aquatic environment, and it is recognized as the smallest game park in East Africa. It remains an excellent destination for adventure trips in Tanzania.

The Da-Brazas monkey is exclusively located on Saanane Island, making it the sole habitat for this species in the country.

Guided nature walks:

Tourists may participate in guided nature excursions to the sunlit beaches and traverse the entirety of Saanane National Park on foot, offering opportunity for intimate encounters with wildlife and nature, including the observation of flora, insects, and more.

Rock climbing:

Tourists can ascend the island to enjoy stunning vistas of Lake Victoria and see various wildlife, including vervet monkeys, elands, impalas, elephants, buffalo, zebras, and numerous plant species. The rock beacons provide magnificent vistas of the lake, particularly when viewed from the Bombay cave.

Boating:

A boat ride on Lake Victoria offers tourists the opportunity to observe water birds, crocodiles, and hippos. Packed lunches can be enjoyed on the water, and these excursions typically last approximately one and a half hours. The magnificent lake also reveals various aquatic animals, including crocodiles, as well as several species of fish.

Sport fishing:

Fishing is a recreational activity available to tourists at Saanane Island National Park. Your guide will assist you during the fishing session. Tourists are advised to bring their own fishing equipment and obtain permits for fishing in designated areas prior to engaging in this activity. The most commonly caught fish in this region are Nile perch and tilapia.

Saanane National Park is accessible year-round; nevertheless, the optimal period for wildlife viewing is from June to August, when the foliage is sparse, facilitating easier animal observation. The optimal period for avian enthusiasts is from November to March.
